Results in from first parallel election:
The Toronto Mayoral contest required six rounds before the leading candidate acheived the required fifty percent plus one support. The animated graphic shows each round and the transfer of votes from dropped candidates.
The Ottawa Mayoral contest was won on the first ballot by the support of over fifty percent plus one for the top candidate.
Your Vote is Powerful
Ranked Choice Voting is a way of picking our elected officials that is superior to the current “One X” system.
The problem with the current municipal voting system
Our current archaic “One X” system often distorts voter intentions. The candidate who accumulates the most votes is declared “the winner” even though more voters have opted for other candidates. What happens if you want to vote for Candidate A, but more importantly, you don't want Candidate B to win? You may end up voting for Candidate C, who is not your first choice, because you think that Candidate C has a better chance of defeating Candidate B. The current system does not account for the value of your intended statement that you support the policies, values, and representation that Candidate A would bring to public discourse.
votebychoice.ca showcases a better way.
People the world over have been ranking their choices at the ballot box for decades while in Ontario we are stuck in a system that was invented for previous centuries. For example, presently "the winner” can claim victory with as little as 20% of the votes cast, leaving 80% of voters out in the cold.
By contrast, we will conduct votes that will run parallel to actual municipal elections. The difference is that people voting in the votebychoice.ca system will be able to rank their choices, thereby giving a fuller expression of voter intent.
